What is it about the ocean that makes life seem so much simpler? Is it sound of the waves that calm us? Is it the notion that it goes on till the edge of the earth? Or is it the feeling of oblivion that might capture us? Whatever it is, the ocean calls to almost everyone. Whichever side of the world you come from, the ocean is bliss. In June of last year, I flew out to California to visit family who just happen to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Newport Beach, Orange County. Ten minutes from Laguna Beach, twenty minutes from Huntington Beach, it feels like Newport Beach is its own slice of paradise. People ride their bikes up and down the boardwalk, music blaring. It’s a calm vibe. A few souvenir shops sprinkle the area, along with restaurants. Beautiful beach homes, and of course, the captivating ocean make this place such a gem. I spent a little over a week there and it was not enough; it never is, no matter where you go.

My family took me to some wonderful restaurants. For tacos we went to Sharkey’s-which apparently is a chain-Wild Taco is my favorite. The Stag Bar and Restaurant is a great place to relax and hang with some locals and tourists. The Blue Beet has live music, an ocean view patio and is known as the oldest bar in Newport. A great place for breakfast is Malibu Farms. I got an acai bowl with granola, bananas, kiwi and a passion fruit sorbet with a vanilla latte. Every Sunday there is a farmers’ market in the square just steps from the ocean. Local farmers and crafters pitch their kiosks to sell their wonderful items. I bought handmade jewelry for friends, local hot sauces and honey for family. There are even gifts and natural chews for your pets.

A Ten minute drive from Newport is Laguna Beach. Absolutely stunning. Eclectic, welcoming and just an all around fun and down to earth vibe. Wonderful shops and restaurants. I highly recommend eating at The Cliff Restaurant. It overlooks the ocean and has the best ceviche, among other wonderful food. I cannot tell you how fresh everything tastes and how beautiful it looks. Definitely picture worthy food, and eating by the beach is nothing short of incredible. Laguna Beach can be hilly, so bring your walking shoes.

Huntington Beach is very touristy. Expensive hotels, lines of souvenir shops on every corner, franchise restaurants and bars. Many volleyball tournaments are played at Huntington Beach. I can definitely see why. The beach seems to go on forever. Volleyball nets are placed strategically on the beach and during the summer when sunset is later in the evening, it would not be unlikely to see people playing on the courts. I feel like if you are the type that likes to do a lot of shopping, try the food fair and constantly want to be on the go, then Huntington Beach is the place for you. It is busy and lively, and there is always something to do.

I enjoyed how close the places I visited were; though in a way they still felt miles apart because they carry their own vibe. I grew up in Northern California, I have been to many places in the state, I lived in Los Angeles, I lived on the coast, but this was my first time visiting Orange County, and I have to say I can’t wait to go back. It also helps when you have family living there who can show you the slow places, the less traveled places and the best experience. Next time I plan to go whale watching. California has a special place in my heart and not just because I grew up there; it is my first home but because it just FEELS different. There is only one other place so far that makes me feel like this and that is New Orleans. So, as I figure out my next adventure, a piece of my soul will always stay in CA.
